Discover the return of the authentic Verdejo in Finca Montepedroso

Located in the Valladolid town of Rueda in the incomparable setting of the Denomination of Origin that bears its name.

Finca Montepedroso is one of the Grandes Pagos in Spain with 25 hectares of its own vineyards at an altitude of 750 m, where white wines with character are produced, 100% Verdejo that recovers the essence of the purest and most traditional Verdejo wines of the area. A work with a clear objective, the return of the authentic Verdejo.

Thanks to the more than 130 years of tradition that Familia Martínez Bujanda brings, Finca Montepedroso is a project where the careful and meticulous elaboration of its wines places it as a reference in tradition, excellence and personality.

ABOUT FINCA MONTEPEDROSO

History

Familia Martínez Bujanda's passion for wine took hold in the second half of the last decade in the Denomination of Origin Rueda (Valladolid, Castilla y León), an emerging Spanish wine-growing area specialized in the production of quality whites with the personality of a native grape variety, the Verdejo.

Although the Verdejo grape had already been authorized as a new variety in both La Rioja and La Mancha, Familia Martínez Bujanda was aware that the identity of a good wine requires, in addition to a soil and a characteristic microclimate, a tradition in cultivation and winemaking that cannot be abstracted from its authentic origins.

Familia Martínez Bujanda acquired the estate in 2008 and built a functional and unique winery, almost flush with the plateau, with the typical materials of the area to achieve a perfect integration into the environment of the vineyards. Finca Montepedroso was inaugurated in April 2012 and its 25 hectares of vineyards produce 120,000 bottles per year.

Vineyard

Finca Montepedroso has an area of 25 hectares dedicated to the monoculture of Verdejo, with a plantation age ranging from 7 to 31 years. Located on a plateau at an altitude of 750 meters, the estate has three types of soils characteristic of a region located in the central sector of the depression formed by the Douro River: the alluvial soil (boulders) that crowns the plateau and represents the largest area of the estate (70%); a clay soil in a ravine, with a slope of 10% where the oldest vineyards are planted (31 years old); and a soil with a large amount of silt and clay sediments, also in a ravine and with slopes of up to 20%.

Prepared by

Harvesting in Rueda takes place at night and is done by machine in order to reduce the oxidation time of the grapes as much as possible and to ensure that they enter the winery as fresh as possible, a fundamental requirement for the production of quality white wines.

Finca Montepedroso wines are not aged in wood, but an 'aging' process is essential, which takes place in stainless steel tanks for at least five months on the lees with weekly stirring in the case of Finca Montepedroso and 18 months in concrete eggs in the case of Montepedroso Enoteca.

This process, in addition to providing the wine with consistency and personality, is key to compensate for the acidity and rusticity of a grape variety such as Verdejo.
