Our vineyards are located on one of the most spectacular meanders of the Ebro River, where 80 hectares of vineyards are planted. It is one of the only four large meanders that exist in La Rioja. In such an ideal location as the one situated between Fuenmayor and Cenicero, two towns of extraordinary vocation and winemaking tradition.

Finca Valpiedra vineyard forms a spectacular landscape that is distributed in three terraces that go down to the river itself, and which after years of work, our technical team has divided into fourteen different plots, with altitudes between 406 and 427 meters.

ABOUT FINCA VALPIEDRA

History

Finca Valpiedra is the main exponent of the entrepreneurial spirit of Familia Martínez Bujanda, who in 1994 began the construction of a winery in a privileged vineyard owned by the family.

Inaugurated in 1999, it has been part of the Grandes Pagos de España Association since its inception. since its inception, an exclusive and small group of wineries distributed throughout the national geography that, with unique vineyards and their own personality, claim the authentic terroirs of the country.

Finca Valpiedra follows the classic Bordeaux stylewith a single vineyard (single vineyard) and four wines made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate: Finca Valpiedraour main reference, Cantos de Valpiedra, Petra de Valpiedra, a 100% Garnacha wine that pays tribute to the old Rioja and, Finca Valpiedra Reserva Blanco, a rarity of the estate. All of them are identified with the stony soil that characterizes the estate and that conditions, together with its own microclimate, the profile of our wines.

Vineyard

Fourteen plots are located in the winery's 80 hectares of vineyards on one of the meanders of the Ebro River.

The exceptional conditions of the estate for vine cultivation are a consequence of its microclimate, influenced by the Cantabria Mountainsto the north, and by the Demandato the south, as well as a very special type of soil composed of a layer of pebbles and limestone.

With a climate somewhere between Atlantic and Mediterranean, winters are cold and long. Summers, on the other hand, are warm and sunny during the day, stimulating the production of tannins and other polyphenolswhich provide body, color and longevity to the wine. At night, the breeze and cooler temperatures prevent dehydration of the plant and, in periods of risk of frost, the proximity to the river is our best natural protector.

As for the soils, they have a sandy loam profile with a surface covered with boulders and a medium level of limestone. The boulders give the estate not only its name, Valpiedra, but also the vineyards' ability to retain the sun's heat and aid ripening, while inhibiting the dehydration of the vines by preventing the rapid evaporation of water on hot summer days.

The boulder floor, common in large areas of Ródano wine-growing areasIt is not very common in Rioja and gives an unmistakable personality to our wines, with a mineral, balsamic and structured character, but always with the elegance that characterizes the elaborations of the best Riojas and Familia Martínez Bujanda.

All the grapes for Finca Valpiedra Reserva Blanco, Petra de Valpiedra, Cantos de Valpiedra and Finca Valpiedra come from the estate. The vintageisby hand and in boxes, with a first selection of clusters on the vines themselves.. Subsequently, a second and rigorous classification is carried out in the winery: before entering the winery, the grapes go through a professional selection table, where all those that are not in perfect condition are discarded.

Finca Valpiedra Reserva Blanco grapes are fermented in French and American oak barrels without temperature control. Prefermentative maceration for two days.

The grapes for Finca Valpiedra and Cantos de Valpiedra are harvested and selected, are emptied into the hopper where they are de-stemmed before being transferred to the fermentation tanks. The winery has 31 small tanks in which the different grape varieties from the different plots (Tempranillo, Graciano and Maturana tinta) ferment separately. In this way, we select only those tanks that meet the demanding quality conditions we require to produce our wines.

In the case of Petra de Valpiedra, the grapes ferment in a concrete tank without temperature control with manual punch-downs and delestages.

The heart of the winery is a building with 2,500 oak barrels. 2,500 oak barrels stacked at a maximum of three high and where temperature and humidity are kept at appropriate and constant levels. In this cellar, our wines are aged between 12 and 24 months, thus achieving the organoleptic characteristics we seek. This winery uses only new French and American oak barrels. In any case, the wood provides a secondary profile, as the main guarantee of the longevity and the longevity of our wines.
