History

Finca Antigua was a real 'crush' for Familia Martínez-Bujanda. In their quest to diversify the original portfolio of Rioja wines, they traveled much of the national geography in search of unique vineyards with personality, until they landed in an extreme environment for growing vines which, far from the traditional and uniform extensions of La Mancha, offered extraordinary possibilities for innovation in winemaking.

The name chosen, Finca Antigua, is a true reflection of the old vines planted at the time of acquisition. In an area of 1,000 hectares, the 421 hectares occupied by the vineyard, with an altitude of over 900 meters, are surrounded by patches of Mediterranean forest, together with scrubland with holm oaks, kermes oaks... The reconversion of the estate involved an arduous technical work of cataloguing and identifying plots, which concluded with the planting of new varieties with great potential for adaptation to the terroir and the conservation of those capable of recovering from the scars of erosion.

Familia Martínez-Bujanda acquired Finca Antigua at the beginning of 1999 and inaugurated the newly built winery in 2003. Finca Antigua brings together the best of the old and the new world, with a collection of surprising, creative and innovative winescreative and innovative wines that express the personality of the land where they are grown.

Located between the provinces of Cuenca and Toledo, Finca Antigua is Familia Martínez-Bujanda's La Mancha DO winery, the perfect platform to unleash imagination and creativity. At Finca Antigua we make innovative, avant-garde and surprising wines that express the personality of a terroir that is different from the rest of the wine-growing region.

Vineyard

Finca Antigua is currently divided into 40 different plots where the different grapes of our extensive varietal catalog are grown and harvested separately, which includes the national varieties of viuraand garnacha, tempranillo y muscatel to the international merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot y syrahwith which we elaborate our creative and avant-garde collection of aged varietals.

Finca Antigua Crianza Único and Finca Antigua Reserva are two wines that combine the fusion of styles and possibilities of the estate, the result of blending several plots, each year the same ones, and which represent another step forward in the winery's creativity.

A special case is Pico GarbanzoThis is a wonderful enclave of just four hectares where we can find a 'disorderly', even atypical, varietal mix (Grenache, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Mazuelo,...) which, planted on a particular clay soil, gives rise to Clavis, a special and surprising wine capable of expressing the scrubland landscape where the vineyards are rooted.

The soils Finca Antigua's soils, in general terms, are characterized by a limestone loam character. limestoneand at the same time poor in organic matter. This fact, together with the estate's high altitude of 900 meters -one of the coldest areas of La Mancha-, allows us to produce unique and innovative wines that express the personality of the terroir, with the elegance, freshness and ageing capacity that only vineyards at the limit are able to offer.

The hardiness of the soils, suitable only for such hardy crops as vines, and the extraordinary temperature range between winter and summer and between day and night, give us a characteristic acidity and a low natural pH in the grapes, so that we obtain full phenolic maturity without abusing the alcohol content, which even in the warmest years does not exceed 14 degrees.

Prepared by

The field work, vineyard parceling and cultivation of varietals in specific vineyard plots, conditions all the winery's work. The production of varietal wines is carried out separately, so the winemaking hall is equipped with 40 stainless steel tanksself-emptying and fully automated, with a capacity for 50,000 kilos of grapes. 50,000 kilos of grapes each one of them.

The winemaking pavilion also has 36 storage and stabilization tanks of different capacities in which the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. malolactic fermentation and where the first racking takes place. In the typification plant, the filtration and clarification treatments are carried out and, finally, the assemblies of the different varieties that will give rise to our Finca Antigua Crianza Único and Finca Antigua Antigua Reserva.

Finca Antigua also works with several research and development projects with micro-elaborations in tanks of only 200 liters to follow up and analyze the different results with experimental varieties y different coupages.

The barrel aging facility has the capacity to house 4,500 French and American oak barrels, which are constantly renewed and stacked using the modern and innovative honeycomb system.

Finca Antigua, the winery, is attached to the water reservoir, which makes it self-sufficient in irrigation and water needs. Humidity in the aging area is key, as it is responsible for a greater or lesser evaporation of the wine from the barrels, so it is necessary to maintain an external humidity level of around 75/80%.

The slope that holds the irrigation reservoir, covered with limestone from the farm itself, acts as a natural reservoir providing us with optimum relative humidity levels, which we complete with a cooling system that keeps the temperature stable between 14 and 17 degrees throughout the year.
