THE HISTORY OF OUR WINERIES

Five wineries make up Familia Martínez Bujanda: Finca Valpiedra (DOCa Rioja), Finca Antigua (DO La Mancha), Finca Montepedroso (DO Rueda), Viña Bujanda (DOCa Rioja) and Cosecheros y Criadores(Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla), all of them with a common denominator: the production of wines from their own vineyards, but with the diversity and richness of very different growing areas.

Joaquín Martínez Bujanda founded the original winery in Oyón (Álava) in 1889, at that time with the clear concept of making wines from his own vineyards against the general trend in Rioja driven by the Bordeaux phylloxera disaster.

The family expansion began in 1951 with Cosecheros y Criadores, a winery in La Rioja designed from the outset to export wines and which today markets 60% of its production abroad under the Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla label. Cosecheros y Criadores is pure innovation, from the versatility of its wines, to its packaging, and with which Familia Martínez Bujanda has always adapted to the needs and requirements of the market.

In the 90s of the last century, siblings Carlos and Pilar, loaded with experience after many years of working with their father, decided to undertake a new project based on the philosophy, the leitmotiv, of Familia Martínez Bujanda: the production of “Vinos de Finca” (estate wines).

In 1997 they began the construction of Finca Valpiedra, a winery integrated in an exceptional landscape on one of the great meanders of the Ebro on the border between the towns of Fuenmayor and Cenicero. Just two years later, Carlos and Pilar fell in love with a spectacular and unrepeatable vineyard in one of the most extreme growing areas of the country, where Finca Antigua has been located since 2003.

In 2009, the family of winegrowers decided to bottle the entire production of the rest of their vineyards in Rioja and inaugurated Viña Bujanda.

Until then, the focus had been on the development of In 2008, with the purchase of 25 hectares of Verdejo vineyards and the construction of Finca Montepedroso (inaugurated in 2012), Familia Martínez Bujanda embarked on the production of white wines with the personality of a unique terroir in the heart of the Rueda DO.
