ABOUT VIÑA BUJANDA

History

A return to the origins of Carlos and Pilar Martínez Bujanda, who decided to retrace the steps of their great-grandfather, Joaquín Martínez Bujanda, and set up a business in the town of Oyón, where in 1889 he founded the original family winery that has given rise to this saga of winegrowers and winemakers, whose fourth and fifth generations continue to run the business today.
Familia Martínez Bujanda, in addition to the unique vineyards of Finca Valpiedra (La Rioja), Finca Montepedroso (Rueda) and Finca Antigua (La Mancha), owns 127 hectares of vineyards in the Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja, which nourish this winery inaugurated in 2009.
Its range of wines completes the Familia Martínez Bujanda portfolio, with a clear concept of elaborating a more traditional Rioja wine profile, with crianza and reserva as a base, but without forgetting the traditional DOCa wines of the year (red, rosé and white).

The winery combines the family tradition of these winegrowers with the most modern winemaking techniques, a concept that is reflected in the iconography and in the labeling of the wines themselves, with a modern image illustrated with a classic typography.

Vineyard

The work in the vineyard conditions all Familia Martínez Bujanda's elaborations. The 28 plots that make up the 127 hectares of Viña Bujanda vineyards are grown and vinified in separate tanks in the winery, which our technical team then assembles to obtain the profile that has always distinguished the best Riojas: wines of good color and medium alcohol content, without abusing over-extraction, in which elegance, silkiness and complexity of nuances are the fundamental characteristics.

Familia Martínez Bujanda works in the field with a concept of sustainable viticulture, using natural organic matter (skins and pruning remains) to fertilize the vineyards and respecting the tradition of non-interventionist practices that we inherited from our great-grandparents and grandparents. In the winery we have the most modern technological developments that guarantee the innovation and constant quality of all our wines.

Viña Bujanda has a large fleet of 2,000 American and French oak barrels, from selected cooperages, which combine the traditional aging of the wine region with the subtle contributions of wood for the Viña Bujanda Crianza and Reserva. Wines to which Wine Advocate (the magazine founded by Robert Parker) has awarded in several vintages ratings of 90 and 92 points respectively, in the same way that other international publications, such as Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, have included them in their world rankings for their extraordinary quality/price ratio.

Vineyard

The 127 hectares of Viña Bujanda are distributed in 28 plots with vines between 20 and 70 years old and with an average planting age of about 30 years,in this sense, Viña Bujanda vineyards are rooted in calcareous clay and ferrous clay soils. The former, of a characteristic ochre color, come from the Sonsierra and are typical of Rioja Alavesa and part of Rioja Alta. They are ideal for the Tempranillo variety and for the aging of wines. The ferrous clay soils, reddish in color and predominant in areas such as the Alto Najerilla, are poor in organic matter and offer fresh reds with body and mineral nutrients, which perfectly complement those from calcareous clay areas for the perfect balance that has historically distinguished traditional Riojas. Viña Bujanda grows Tempranillo (red) and Viura (white), the two most representative varieties of the wine-growing region, with which we elaborate our wine catalog.
