Finca Montepedroso

Finca Montepedroso has an area of 25 hectares dedicated to the monoculture of verdejo, with a plantation age ranging from 7 to 31 years. Located on a plateau at 750 meters altitudethe farm has three types of soils characteristic of a region located in the central sector of the depression formed by the Douro River: the soil of the alluvial (stone pebbles) that crowns the plateau and accounts for the largest surface area of the payment (70%); a soil clayey in ravine, with a 10% slope where the oldest vineyards are planted (31 years old); and a soil that is with a large amount of silt and clay sedimentsalso in ravines and with slopes of up to 20%.

Familia Martínez Bujanda grows exclusively Verdejo grapes at Finca Montepedroso, with the aim of producing the best wines in the region that represent the authentic spirit of Rueda. With an average yield well below the maximum authorized by the appellation of origin, the winery produces two wines. The first, with the same name as the property, Finca Montepedroso, does not hide the austerity and rusticity of the Verdejo grape, characteristics that distinguish the great wines of Rueda from others made with the same variety in other Spanish geographical areas. And Montepedroso Enoteca, which will only be released during exceptional vintages. Aged for 18 months in concrete eggs. Subsequently, it has been aged for 1 year in the bottle. It is a much more mineral and deep wine, the fresh fruit takes a back seat, leaving in the foreground the notes of smoke, limestone and incense. The palate is denser, without losing tension and freshness.

In this regard, in addition to the soils, the climate is a determining factor for the crop, with cold and very long winters, short springs with late frosts and hot and dry summers. The vines are nourished deep in the subsoil by water from the water reservoir. The extraordinary thermal amplitude, both between seasons and during the day and night, allows us to produce wines with an extraordinary freshness and acidity that, in the case of Finca Montepedroso, is enhanced by aging on its own lees.
