What is a premium wine?

It is colloquially said that there are different colors to suit different tastes, something that can easily be extended to wines. The world of wine is so diverse and fascinating that there is always something new to discover. However, there is one segment that stands out for its excellence and exclusivity: premium wines. These wines not only offer an unparalleled sensory experience, but also represent the best of viticulture.

In this new blog we will explore the characteristics that make a premium wine a masterpiece in every bottle.

Grape quality

The quality of a premium wine begins in the vineyard. The grapes used for these wines come from the best parcels, where the terroir – a combination of factors such as climate, soil and altitude – is ideal for that specific grape variety. The winemakers take care of every detail, ensuring that only the best grapes make it to the winery.

An author’s elaboration

Making a premium wine is an artisanal process that requires time and dedication. Often, these wines are fermented in small batches, using traditional techniques that have been perfected over generations. Minimal intervention in the process allows the grapes to express their natural character and unique terroir profile.

Aging the key to its success

Aging in oak barrels or concrete eggs is one of the crucial stages in the production of premium wines. In the specific case of barrels, they are generally made of French or American oak, and impart complexity and depth to the wine, bringing notes of vanilla, spices, and sometimes a smoky touch. The time the wine spends in the barrel may vary, but it is always long enough for it to acquire a perfect balance between the flavors of the fruit and those of the oak.

Guarding potential

Premium wines are designed to age well. Over time, these wines not only maintain their quality, but also develop new nuances that enrich the experience of those who enjoy them. This ability to evolve in the bottle is one of the most valued characteristics of premium wines, which is why many enthusiasts choose to keep these bottles in their personal cellar for several years.

Exclusivity

We cannot talk about premium wines without mentioning their exclusivity. Due to the careful selection of grapes, the limited production and the meticulous winemaking process, these wines are usually limited, making each sip a unique and memorable experience.
